I found this really neat interactive map at on Cooler Planet's website where you can see the progress that solar power has made in California over the past decade. You can adjust a lever to select any year between 1999 and 2008, and you get a color-coded map that displays installations per year in addition to the amount of energy saved as a result. It might help you get an idea of how much progress we are actually making. The fun part (though it is not entirely surprising) is that Albany and Berkeley make up one of the statewide hotspots.
